Thomas was born in May 1858.  Thomas' father was Colonel Edmund Goode and his mother was Ann M. McGhee.  His paternal grandparents were John Goode and Ann M. Leftwich. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Lynch, Edward, Elizabeth, Roberta, Mary, Susan and Edmonia.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
