Mackerness was born on September 16th, 1854. Mackerness' father was Major Garland Goode and his mother was Frances Burns. His paternal grandparents were Philip Goode and Caroline Williams. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Giles, Burton, Barnwell Rhett, Philip, Kate Matthis, Ellen, Mary B., Hattie, Bettie and Mary. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Son of Garland, Dau of Garland, Dau of Garland and Dau of Garland.General Notes
