Layton Field 
Layton was born on January 24th, 1876 in Dieterich, IL.1 Layton's father was Samuel Field and his mother was Matilda Layton Field. His maternal grandparents were Elias Layton and Mary Walls Layton. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John R., Truman C., Lewis E., Charles A., Frank, Clara J., Nancy J., Rebecca A., Sarah E. and Theodocia. He was the third youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 65 on March 21st, 1941 in Effingham, IL.1 General Notes

Enlisted in U.S. Army on March 1, 1897. Described as having brown eyes,
brown hair, and a ruddy complexion. Served in Light Battery "F" of the
Fifth Regiment of Artillery. Promoted to Sergeant on November 12, 1899.
Discharged on February 28, 1900, at Manila.
When he got his pension check, he would hitch up the mules, Bill & Kate,
to the wagon and go to Dieterich for the month's groceries. Always kept a
large garden, picked wild blackberries. Ate squirrels and had leghorn
chickens for eggs. Forest bought him a car and he had lots of problems
until he learned to use the brakes instead of saying "Whoa!".
