William's father was Thomas Hutchinson Botts and his mother was Mary Stone.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Botts and Jane Tyler. He had three brothers and a sister, named Albert, Benjamin, Henry and Mary Berkeley. He had a half-brother named Colonel Lawson.
