John was born in 1758 in North Carolina.  John's father was Benjamin Threasher and his mother was Elizabeth UNKNOWN.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Threasher and Elizabeth UNKNOWN. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Benjamine, Isaac, Richard, George, Robert, Elizabeth and Rachel.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
