His paternal grandparents were John William Province and Sarah Yard; his maternal grandparents were David Casto and Phoebe Gandy. He had nine brothers and seven sisters, named Benjamin E, David, Joseph, Samuel, Thomas, Jesse, Simeon, Uriah, Elisha, Sarah, Elizabeth, Lydia, Patience, Jane, Phoebe and Mary Ann. He had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named B Franklin, Thearon, Joseph M, Selina, Uanna, Rachel and Agnes.-
