His paternal grandparents were Alfred the Great King of England and Ealhswith of the Gaini; his maternal grandfather was Sigehelm Ealdorman of Kent. He had two brothers and a sister, named Aethelstan, Eadred and Edgifu (Edgiva). He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Athelstan, St. Edith, Edgiva, Eadgyth (Edith), Edhilda and Elgiva.
