His paternal grandparents were Frederick Louis Hanover Prince-Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenberg. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named George IV Hanover, Frederick Hanover, William IV Henry Hanover, Ernest Augustus Hanover, Adolphus, Alfred, Octavius, Charlotte Augusta Matilda, Amelia, Elizabeth, Mary and Sophia.-
