Matthew was born in 1667 in Guilford, New Haven, CT.1   Matthew's father was Matthew Beckwith and his mother was Elizabeth Unknown.  His paternal grandparents were Matthew Beckwith and Mary Elizabeth Lynne. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Jonathan, Prudence, Elizabeth, Ruth and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named Griswold.  He died at the age of 73 in 1740 in Guilford, New Haven, CT.1
