in July 1074, probably at Alfonso's instigation, el Cid marrie d the king's niece Jimena, daughter of the Count de Oviedo. He t hus became allied by marriage to the ancient royal dynasty of Le on. Very little is known about Jimena. The couple had one son an d two daughters. The son, Diego Rodrguez, was killed in battl e against the Muslim Almoravid invaders from North Africa, at Co nsuegra (1097).
