Valencia , 10 July 1099, "el Campeador," great national hero of Spain, su bject of epic poems and ballads, ruler of Valencia 15 June 1094- 1099, son of Diego Lainez de Bibar in Clastile, d. ca. 1058; m . 14 July 1074 Jimena (Ximena), d. ca. 1115, dau. Diego, Count d e Oviedo, and Cristina (great-granddau. Alfonso V, King of Leon. )
Spanish EL CID, also called EL CAMPEADOR ("the Champion"), bynam e of RODRIGO, or RUY, DIAZ DE VIVAR (b. c. 1043, Vivar, near Bur gos, Castile [Spain]--d. July 10, 1099, Valencia), Castilian mil itary leader and national hero. His popular name, El Cid (from S panish Arabic as-sid, "lord"), dates from his lifetime.
The Cid's princely status was emphasized when his daughter Crist ina married a prince of Aragon, Ramiro, lord of Monzn, and hi s other daughter, Mara, married Ramn Berenguer III, count of B arcelona.
Rodrigo Diaz (de Vivar), male line descendant (it would seem) o f Judges Lain Calvo and Nuno Rasura, tracing back to a 9th centu ry Nuno Belchidez. In this descent, he was linked (in the male l ine) to some of the early (non-hereditary) Counts of Castile, th e Banu Gomez, the Banu Morel, and the Flainez/de Cifuentes famil ies, and (in the female line) to the later (hereditary) Counts o f Castile. He married Jimena Diaz, a descendant of the 10th cen tury count Piniolo Gundemariz. -> Christina (Ruiz) de Vivar, mar ried Ramiro Sanchez, Count of Monzon, who was grandson (probabl y through an illegitimate link) of Garcia el de Najera, King o f Navarre. -> Garcia IV, King of Navarre. He married Margaret l 'Aigle, who descended from a Norman lord killed at Hastings (an d thus one of the few proven Hastings descents). -> Blanche of N avarre, married Sancho III, the Desired, King of Castile, son o f Alfonso VII, and great grandson of Alfonso VI, el Cid's contem porary, and sometimes enemy on the throne of Leon/Castile. -> Al fonso VIII, King of Castile, victor at the battle of Las Navas d e Tolosa, which forever tipped the Iberian scales in favor of th e Christians. He married Eleanor, daughter of Henry II of Englan d, and Eleanor of Aquitaine. In addition to son Enrique I (wh o d.s.p.) he had several daughters, including the wife of Loui s VIII, and -> Berenguela of Castile, wife of Alfonso IX, King o f Leon. This marriage was disolved by order of the pope (Alfons o IX and Alfonso VIII were first cousins), but their children we re proclaimed legitimate. These included Berenguela, wife of Je an, King of Jerusalem, and -> (St.) Fernando III, King of Castil e and Leon, who was father of Alfonso X, the Learned, who compet ed for the Empire, and -> Leonor of Castile, wife of Edward I, w hose other wife, Margaret of France was descended from Louis VII I.
