An account of this family, prepared by W. G. Stanard, genealogist of Richmond, Va., has been published in the William and Mary College Quarterly, beginning Oct. 1895, vol. iv., and continuing through the several issues to 1898. William Thornton purchased of George Mott, 2000 acres, "in the ffreshes of the Rappahannock.". John and George Mott had patented, in 1672, over 15000 acres, on Muddy Creek.
