Mary, m. Matthew of Alsace, son of Thierry, Count of Flanders, a nd Sybil, dau. of Fulk V, Count of Anjou.

She was dedicated to religion in her infancy and enetered as a n ovice at Lillechurch Priory, Kent. She transferred to Romsey Abb ey, Hampshire, where she was professed a nun between 1148 and 11 5. She was elected Abbess of Romsey after 1155. She succeeded he r brother William as Countess of Boulogne on 5th October, 1159 . She was abducted from her convent in 1160 by Matthew I, Coun t of Flanders and Boulogne, who made her his wife in defiance o f her religious vows around the same time. They had two daughter s, Ida and Matilda. The marriage was annulled around 1169 and Ma ry re-entered the religious life at the Benedictine nunnery of S t. Austrebert, near Montreuil, France.
