Narrative
[williamstone.FTW]
! Died at age 92, ancestor of Montgomery County families.
!"Thomas took the Oath of Loyalty and Support of the Government of
Maryland, which placed him on the side of the Americans and a Patriot in
the Revolutionary War. He and his three sons took the oath on the same
day, 3 March 1778, and their names appear on the Return for Montgomery
County of Elisha Williams." Ten children listed, three being sons. (DAR
Patriot Index, p 181.
!per "Pioneers of Old Monocacy--the early Settlement of Frederick
County" --Tracey and Dern:
Thomas Dawson joined the Catoctin Valley settlement in 1741. He
located at the foot of South Mountain, directly south of the present-day
Burkittsville. "Dawson's Purchase" was surveyed on May 14, 1741 with
its beginning point on the 'east side of Blue Ridge and on the south side
of Cabin Branch which descends into Catoctin Creek 300 yards below a
place called Philip's Cabin.' From this description we know that at least
a part of today's Broad Run was at one time called Cabin Branch. In 1750
Dawson enlarged his tract by a resurvey and then in 1754 conveyed the
entire 215-plus acres to Henry Truman. Dawson, or his son, Thomas, Jr.,
apparently returned to what is now Montgomery County.
