Robert II (996-1031), the Pious

Note:
> Who was the father of Adelaide wife of Renaud I comte de Never s, Hugues I "Capet" or his son Robert II king of France? I hav e a dynastic table that gives an Adelaide to each of them and ma rries Renaud to Hugues daughter. Francois Velde in his web pag e gives also two Adelaide but marries Renaud to Robert's daughte r.

This was the subject of much confusion until clarified by a coup le of articles in Medieval Prosopography. There were two roya l princesses who historians refered to by the name Adela or it s variants, and who were each claimed to be a daughter of Rober t II. Because of this double Adele, it had been argued that on e of them, the wife of Renaud, was actually Robert's sister, th e daughter of Hugh Capet. In fact, both were daughters of Rober t II, but both were NOT named Adelaide. The wife of Renaud was A lvais, a derivative form of the name Hedwig and a German name br ought into the family by the wife of Hugh Magnus. The wife of B aldwin of Flanders was named Adelais, which shares similar root s with Adelaide. Because of the failure to recognize the forme r as a separate name from the latter, it caused historians to 'f ix' a problem that didn't really exist. Recent work has demonst rated clearly that both were Robert's. -- taf
