  "Walter,  successor of Hugh" "Walter de Laci, obtained, 9 King J ohn, a confirmation of his dominion of Meath, to be held by hi m and his heirs for the service of fifty knights' fees; as als o of all his fees in Fingall, in the valley of Dublin, to be hel d by the service of seven knights' fees. But in three years afte rwards, King John passing into Ireland with his army, Laci was f orced to deliver himself up and all his possessions in that king dom, and to abjure the realm. He was subsequently banished fro m England, but in the 16th of the same reign, he seems to have m ade his peace, for he was then allowed to repossess Ludlow, wit h the castle; and the next year he recovered all his lands in Ir eland, except the castle and lands of Dogheda, by paying a fin d of 4,000 marks to the crown. After this we find him sheriff o f Herefordshire, in the 18th of John, and 2nd of Henry III., an d in the 14th of the latter king, joined with Geffrey de Marisco , then justice of Ireland, and Richard de Burgh, in subduing th e King of Connaught, who had taken up arms to expel the Englis h from his territories. So much for the secular acts of this pow erful feudal baron. In Ireland he founded the abbey of Beaubec , which was first a cell to the great abbey of Bec, in Normandy , and afterwards to Furneise, in Lancashire. Walter Laci m. Marg aret, dau. of William de Braose, of Brecknock, and in the year 1 241, being then infirm and blind, departed this life, "Vir, inte r omnes nobiles Hibernia, eminentissimus," leaving his great inh eritance to be divided amongst females, viz., the daus. of Gilbe rt de Lacy, his son (who d. in his life time), and Isabel his wi fe, sister of John Bigod. Which daus. were, Maud, wife of Pete r de Geneva, who had livery of Ludlow Castle in her right, and a fter this in the 38th Henry III., of Geffrey de Genevill, who ha d livery of the castle of Trim, in the co. of Meath, as part o f her inheritance; and Margery, m. to John de Verdon, and had fo r her share of the property, the castle of Webbeley. The honou r of Ewyas-Lacy having been assigned for the dower of Isabel, he r mother."
