Madoc ap Maredudd 
Madoc was born about 1091 in of Montgomeryshire, Wales.1 Madoc's father was Maredudd ap Bleddyn and his mother was Hunydd verch Efnydd. His paternal grandparents were Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and Haer verch Cillin; his maternal grandparents were Efnydd ap Gwerny Lord Duffryn and Efa verch Llywelyn. He was an only child. He died in 1160 in Winchester, Hampshire, England. He was buried in 1160 in Meifod yn Powys.1 1 General Notes

Impressed by & yielded to Henry II of England's power.
Convinced he needed Henry to withstand Owain ap Gruffydd of
Gwyned.
Assisted Henry vs. Owain ap Gruffydd of Gwyned.
His death caused a struggle for succession.
Allowed his nephews Owain & Meurig rule of Cyfeilioc as an
appendage to the kingdom of Powys per the customs of the time.
When Madoc's son & heir succeeded, Owain was able to keep
Cyfieliog separate.
Resulted in only northern Powys going to his son Gruffydd.
Resulted in Powys' loss of status as equal w/ kingdoms of
Gwynedd & Deheubarth.
When Madog died in 1160 there was a struggle for succession.
In 1149 Madog had allowed his nephews, Owain and Meurig, to
rule Cyfieliog as an appendage to the kingdom according to the
custom of those times - never intending that the area should be
separated from the kingdom of Powys. When
Madog's son, Gruffudd, succeeded his father, Owain was able to
keep Cyfieliog and some adjacent areas for himself, leaving
only northern Powys for Gruffudd. This split the kingdom into
two resulting in Powys' loss of generally equal status with the
kingdoms of Gwynedd and Deheubarth.
