Lavania's father was William Anderson Summer and her mother was Susannah Setzler. Her paternal grandparents were William Summer and Catherine Elizabeth Fulmer. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John W., Henry Pinckney, Frances L., Cornelia E. and Mary Jane.-
