Heyward's father was Ollie L. Shealy and his mother was Maude Burkette. His paternal grandparents were Could also be Cohens Luther Shealy and Adella Wessinger. He had a brother and a sister, named Wofford M. and Gurstal Gertrude. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Jack Durham, Wilbur Lester, Ralph Layton, Mary Virginia, Living and Zenith Elizabeth.-
