Rhys ap Tewdwr Mawr was born in 0997 in of Carmarthenshire, Wales.¹ Rhys ap Tewdwr Mawr's father was the Great Prince of South Wales Tewdwr Mawr and his mother was Gwenllian verch Gwyn. His paternal grandparents were Cadell ap Einion and Elinor verch Gwerystan; his maternal grandfather was Gwyn ap Rhytherch. He was an only child.
