Evans' father was James A. Long and his mother was Salla Alma Shealy. His paternal grandparents were Drayton Isaiah Long and Mahaly Catherine Shealy. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Roy Lee, James Leland, Ralph, Cecil, J. Thurrell, Mae, Alda and Cathel (Callie).-
