Vassie's father was Thomas Sebastian Huffman and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Summer. Her maternal grandparents were George Michael Summer and Mary Magdalene Chapman. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert Pinkney, John A., George M., Willie Meter Thompson, Mary C., Emma E. and Lula.-
