Sarah was born in 1868. Sarah's father was John Dow Thurston and her mother was Martha Winston Poor. Her paternal grandparents were John Thurston and Louisa F. Poor; her maternal grandparents were Robert Poor and Frances ?. She had a brother and a sister, named Lee and Ettymore. She was the oldest of the three children.-
