Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Cosgray Sweeney and Martha Tomasia Shields; her maternal grandparents were William Armstrong and Lillian Young. She had three brothers and a sister, named James Carington, Robert Stewart, John Armstrong and Helen Jean.-
