Marcellus was born in 1856 in Hanover Co., VA.1   Marcellus' father was William R. Stanley and his mother was Sarah J. ?. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named William R., Henry, Benjamin, James J., Samuel, Clifton, Julian, Pendleton, Sarah, Nettie and Ida.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
