Edward Thomas was born in December 1855 in Hanover Co., Virginia.  Edward Thomas' father was Richard James Stanley and his mother was Jane Frances Stanley. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George Wesley, James, Robert, Louisiana and Eliza J..  He was the third youngest of the six children.
