Josephine was born about 1818 in Goochland Co., Virginia.  Josephine's father was Holman Shoemaker and her mother was Elizabeth Ford.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Shoemaker and Frances Shephard. She had a sister named Virginia C..  She was the younger of the two children. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Macon, William S., Fleming P. and Janette Pauline.
