Nelson's father was Joseph M. Shelton and his mother was Mary Harris. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Shelton and Judith Clough Anderson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John Marshall, Joseph, Robert P., Samuel Henry, William Harris, Elizabeth and Judith.-
