Nan Jan was born on May 22nd, 1910 in Briston, TN. Nan Jan's father was William Edmond Quarles and her mother was Nellie Annett Elizabeth Morgan. Her paternal grandparents were Lemuel B. Quarles and Jane McKenzie Ladd. She had five brothers and a sister, named Henry Franklin, James Cowardin, Lemuel Cleveland, John Mifflin, Luther McKenzie and Lucy Bell. She was the youngest of the seven children.-
