Sally A. was born in 1839 in Fluvanna, VA. Sally A.'s father was Samuel Spotswood Payne and her mother was Sarah C. Timberlake. Her paternal grandparents were Barrett Goodson Payne and Lucy Ann Richardson; her maternal grandparents were Horace Timberlake and Catherine Holland. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John S., James, Lucy and Susan. She had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas Clark, Frank Mead, George Craven, Charles StClair, Cornelia Claiborne, Ann Carr and Sallie Lewis.-
