Her paternal grandparents were John Payne and ? ?; her maternal grandparents were Nathaniel West Dandridge and Dorothea Spotswood. She had five brothers and five sisters, named John Dandridge, Archer, Alexander Spotswood, Americus, John Robert Dandridge, Ann Spotswood, Dorothea Dandridge, Jane S., Elizabeth and Catherine.-
