Benjamin's father was Devall Payne and his mother was Hannah Innes Brent. His paternal grandparents were William Payne and Susannah Clark. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Devall, Thomas Young, William Pierce, Hugh Brent, Innes Baxter, John, Margaret Young, Elizabeth Baxter, Mary, Penelope, Alicia Ann and Susan Clark.-
