Bessie Winston's father was John Mason Lee and her mother was Nora Bankhead. Her paternal grandparents were Sydney Smith Lee and Anna Maria Mason; her maternal grandparents were William Bankhead and Dorothea Minor. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William Bankhead, John Mason, Nannie Mason and Dorothea Bankhead.-
