Winston's father was Drury Wood Bowles and his mother was Barbara Duval Winston. His paternal grandparents were Drury Wood Knight Bowles and Mary Ann Richardson; his maternal grandparents were Edward Gates Winston and Jane Elizabeth Duval. He had six half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Aubrey R., Charles Elmore, Drury Wood, Edgar Wood, Fendall Cullen, Harry, Mary Olena, Addie Gray and Annie Lee.-
