Archibald was born in 1758 in Chesterfield Co., Virginia. Archibald's father was Hudson Blankenship and his mother was Edith Wilkinson. His paternal grandparents were John B. Blankenship and Elizabeth Hudson; his maternal grandfather was John Wilkinson. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Daniel, Reuben, Henry, Jesse, Prudence, Levi, Jacob, Sally, Edith, Obedience, Leauraney, Elizabeth and Nancy. He was the second oldest of the fourteen children.-
