Sarah was born about 1832. Sarah's father was James Anderson Armistead and her mother was Elizabeth D. Howard. Her paternal grandparents were John Armistead and Mary Ann Spencer; her maternal grandfather was William Howard. She had a brother and three sisters, named Drury Lacy, Elvira L., Lucy J. and Louisa A.. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
