Betsy's father was Robert Anderson and her mother was Elizabeth Shelton. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Anderson and Elizabeth Clough; her maternal grandparents were John Shelton and Eleanor Parks. She had four brothers and a sister, named Robert, Samuel Clough, Charles, Richard and Cecily.-
