Charlotte was born about 1845 in Mississippi, USA. Charlotte's father was *Jessie G Lay and her mother was *Barbara Cooke. Her paternal grandparents were Amos Sr Lay and *Sarah Otterson; her maternal grandparents were *Nelson Mordecai Cooke and *Nancy Esther McGee. She had a brother and twelve sisters, named John A, *Martha Ann, Martha, Terilla E., Mary Jane, Sarah, Zarilla, Frances, Caroline, Emma, Alice, Ellen and Emily. She was the fifth oldest of the fourteen children.-
