Hester was born in 1725 in Cape Province, South Africa and her christening took place on February 24th, 1726 in Drakenstein, Cape Province, South Africa. Hester's father was Carel de Jager and her mother was Hester de Jager (Erasmus).  Her paternal grandparents were Pieter Christiaan de Jager and Hermina de Jager (Karels). She had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Pieter, Gideon, Carel, Johannes, Martha, Magdalena and Maria.
