Gideon was born in 1729 and his christening took place on May 15th, 1729.  Gideon's father was Carel de Jager and his mother was Magdalena de Jager (Malherbe).  His paternal grandparents were Pieter Christiaan de Jager and Hermina de Jager (Karels); his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Pieter, Carel, Johannes, Martha, Magdalena and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Hester.
