Oluf was born in 1857.  Oluf's father was Rom and his mother was Anne Tobine Olsen (Hagen).  His maternal grandparents were Hagen and Anne Marie Rom (Oftebro). He had three brothers and five sisters, named Tobias, Ole, Ole, Anne, Anne, Maren, Oline and Oline.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
