William was born in 1725 in Staten Island, Richmond, New York, United States.  William's father was Nathaniel Brittain and his mother was Elizabeth Gerritsen.  His maternal grandparents were Gerrit Gerritsen and Neesje Pieterse Marselis. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Nathaniel, Richard, Abraham, Richard, John, Abraham, <Unknown>, <Unknown>, Alice, Sarah, Rachel, <Unknown> and <Unknown>.  He died at the age of 79 on March 15th, 1804 in Hunterdon, New Jersey, United States.
