John was born in 1713 in Staten Island, Richmond, New York, United States.  John's father was Nathaniel Brittain and his mother was Elizabeth Gerritsen.  His maternal grandparents were Gerrit Gerritsen and Neesje Pieterse Marselis. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Nathaniel, Richard, Abraham, Richard, William, Abraham, <Unknown>, <Unknown>, Alice, Sarah, Rachel, <Unknown> and <Unknown>.  He died at the age of 41 in 1754 in Middletown, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States.
