Joseph F. was born in December 1844 in St. Mary's, Maryland, USA.1   Joseph F.'s father was William Spalding Bowles and his mother was Susanna Ford.  His paternal grandmother was Bibiana Spalding; his maternal grandparents were Phillip Ford and Catherine Holton. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William T, William T, Stephen H, John Ignatius, Dominick T, Daniel J, Eleanor A, Eleanor A and Ellen Ann.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William T and Anne Elenor.  He died at the age of 83 on February 14th, 1928 in St Mary County, Maryland, United States.
