Ellen Ann was born in 1848 in St Marys, St Mary's, Maryland, United States.  Ellen Ann's father was William Spalding Bowles and her mother was Susanna Ford.  Her paternal grandmother was Bibiana Spalding; her maternal grandparents were Phillip Ford and Catherine Holton. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named William T, William T, Stephen H, John Ignatius, Dominick T, Joseph F., Daniel J, Eleanor A and Eleanor A.  She was the youngest of the ten children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William T and Anne Elenor.  She died at the age of 85 in 1933.
