Daniel J was born in 1845 in St Marys, St Mary's, Maryland, United States.1   Daniel J's father was William Spalding Bowles and his mother was Susanna Ford.  His paternal grandmother was Bibiana Spalding; his maternal grandparents were Phillip Ford and Catherine Holton. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William T, William T, Stephen H, John Ignatius, Dominick T, Joseph F., Eleanor A, Eleanor A and Ellen Ann.  He was the seventh oldest of the ten children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William T and Anne Elenor.
