Peder was born in 1756 in Gloppestad i Gloppen.  Peder's father was Gunder Rasmusson and his mother was Inger Jonsdotter.  His paternal grandparents were Rasmus Antonson and Kari Olsdotter. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Jon, Rasmus, Abel, Ole, Kari and Marte.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
