Marte was born in 1761 in Gloppestad i Gloppen.  Marte's father was Gunder Rasmusson and her mother was Inger Jonsdotter.  Her paternal grandparents were Rasmus Antonson and Kari Olsdotter. She had five brothers and a sister, named Jon, Rasmus, Abel, Ole, Peder and Kari.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
