Alfred was born in 1842 in Marden, Kent.  Alfred's father was William STANLEY and his mother was Lucy BOORMAN.  His paternal grandparents were Zebulon STANLEY and Ann SHAW. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Stephen, James Thomas, Louisa and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
