James was born in 1837 in West Peckham, Kent.  James' father was Robert MARTIN and his mother was Mary WARRINGTON.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann; his maternal grandparents are James WARRINGTON and Elizabeth. He had five sisters named Mary, Ann, Eliza, Ellen and Rebecca.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
